Bologna Sandwiches

In the early 1950s, our trips were long, primarily due to our Dodge sedan overheating and poor two-lane roads. We also made roadside stops to eat. Although Mom packed delicious lunches, we loved bologna sandwiches on white bread with a bottle of Pepsi the best. Back then, restaurants and many public eating establishments practiced de facto segregation against Mexican Americans, so we mostly ate inside our car. As an adult, I sometimes crave a bologna sandwich. When the white bread sticks to the top of my mouth, I wash it away with a Pepsi, dislodging memories of those unjust years.
